Phnom Kulen National Park is a famous attraction in Siem Reap. During the Angkor dynasty, Phnom Kulen was called Mount Mahendraparvata, and it was here that Jayavarman II declared himself a universal monarch, an act generally considered the founding of the Khmer Empire. Phnom Kulen features spectacular waterfalls, ancient temple ruins, and sacred riverbed carvings, making it one of Cambodia's most sacred mountains. The mountain is home to the famous Reclining Buddha and the River of a Thousand Lingas, with hundreds of lingas (symbols of the Hindu god Shiva) carved into the riverbed.
山の上に寺院や遺跡がたくさんあります。登りは階段ですが、かなりきついです。最も新しい仏塔である Preah Shakyamuni の手前で地元の子供から靴を脱げと言われます。Preah Shakyamuni は新しいだけあり、壮観で写真映えします。高台からの眺めも良いです。これだけ見て帰るのでなければ（＝先に進んで他も見るつもりなら）、靴は持って行かなければなりません。ここから先は靴がないと歩けない道です。靴を取りに帰ると、あまり執拗に食い下がりましませんが、子供からチップを求められます。この先、仏塔、寺院など立ち寄るたび、花やら線香やら売ろうとしてくる人がいます。また、建物の中にはどういう関係かわかりませんが、たいてい人がいます。私はそうしませんでしたが、中に入って写真を撮ろうとするとチップを求められるかもしれません。ともあれ、信仰の対象なので、それなりの敬意を払って拝観した方が良いと思います。階段前にTourist Information があり、英語パンフレットの用意がありますが、字が細かくて見づらく、かつ肝心の建物の前には何の解説もないので、それぞれ何なのかよくわかりません。本当に楽しむなら予習をしていく方が良いと思います。
